God can only be a father

The secret of Lucia Filipino was her “perpetual confidence in God, because – she said -” he could not cease to be my father”, the Pope recalled the figure of the saint and the “essential certainty” that accompanied her entire existence. The occasion was a pilgrimage audience on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the birth of the religious received by Francisco Participants in Sala Paulo. opinion On May 14. Among them, the sisters of the Institute of Pious Professors she founded and the faithful of the dioceses of Viterbo and Civitavecchia Tarquinia, where she lived, established schools for poor youth. This is the words of the Supreme Pontiff.

Dear brothers and sisters
welcome!

I greet the two Sisters, Mrs. Pias Filipini, Mother General and to all of you, faithful in the Diocese of Viterbo and Civitavecchia Tarquinia, accompanied by your bishops and priests. A cordial greeting also to the mayors and other authorities present here. And you guys first communion!

I share with you your joy on the 350th anniversary of the birth of Saint Lucia Filipino. This jubilee year is a precious time for each of you: it is like returning to the source to attract new energies for the future; But it is also an opportunity to give thanks to the Lord and to ask Him also to be channels of the same grace that Saint Lucia welcomed and so generously distributed to so many people. I would like to share with you two brief reflections: one is directed directly to the Instituto Mestras Pias Filipino; And one for all of you, Saint Lucia lovers.

Dear Pias Masters, Your task requires even the name, Master. The teacher is the one who teaches. However, the saying goes, you don’t know what you know, you know what you are. We convey to others what we are inside. It is not enough to fill your head with thoughts, this is not educational; Education is the transmission of life. And to be a master is to live a mission. On the other hand, if we make beautiful speeches, but life goes in another direction, we risk being just actors playing a role, but not teachers.

The example of your organization can help you live this mission. Saint Lucia is usually depicted with a cross in her hand or in a gesture pointing to it. She knew how to learn a lot, first of all because she herself did not stop being a disciple of Jesus the Master and standing before his throne, the cross. Before her eyes was the life-giving God and she felt called to give the gift of life. Thus he conveyed to others what he kept in his heart: not sermons and theories, but content and life. Her mission as a teacher was no different from her mystical experience.

My dear sisters, all this reminds us that we cannot be content with the “teaching” of Jesus; Jesus, first and foremost, bears witness. This is how faith is transmitted. Communicating with God is only if He dwells in our lives, fills our emotions, unites our thoughts and inspires our actions. What is the evidence for that? Our openness to others: Those who know the Lord do not close themselves in the treasury, but live to serve, without worrying about where or what they are asked to do. Live in service, for service is the great teaching of the Master who came to serve and not to be served (cf. mc 10, 45).

We often talk about the difficulties of religious life, the lack of invitations, etc. I would like to give you some advice, which is not the immediate solution to these problems, but the way to solve them: we are not called in the first place to “put Jesus at the center”, as if we were the heroes; We are invited first Get out of the center!to which he returns. Living dedication as a call to service. This allows Jesus to act in us as He wills and teaches us to overcome surrender and nostalgia, to read our complex age, and to courageously take new paths in keeping with the times. It is good to remember the image of Saint Lucia crucified in her hand: not for us, but for him he is the center; And we will be good teachers if we continue to be disciples, called every day to serve with joy!

A second thought for all who celebrate Saint Lucia Filipino. This woman had a secret: she lived in constant trust in God, because – she said – “he could not stop being my father.” I would like to repeat these words to you: He can’t help but be my father. So often in life we get anxious because we have to leave a lot of things behind: some security, younger years, a little health, maybe loved ones, etc… Well, if there are people and things in life that we’ll have sooner or later The later we leave behind, there is an existence that will never leave us, an essential certainty that will always accompany us and that no one or no one will be able to cancel: God can only be my father. this is beautiful! Shall we do it all together? God can’t help but be my father. Again louder: God can only be my Father. Take this thought to heart. Everything can fail, but not the tenderness of God. Let us always remember this, especially in dark times: God never forsakes us, because he can only be our Father. Let us repeat it together: God cannot forsake my Father.

Let us keep this good news in our hearts, which fuels confidence. I hope you will announce it to those you meet, to give hope to them too. This is much needed today; It is a task that concerns each of us. Good message then: I give you all the grace and ask you, please, to pray for me. Thank you!
