Nintendo Switch Sports – Review

Nintendo Switch Sports is one of the most unexpected games of the year, being the spiritual successor to the classic Wii Sports, which was released in 2006 at the launch of the Nintendo Wii. At the time, Wii Sports was one of the ones responsible for introducing us to this new way of playing: innovative, simple, accessible and turning video games into a party game. And now, nearly 16 years later, what is Switch Sports doing revolutionary for us?

The Nintendo Switch Sports is nothing more than an improved version of the “party game” style games we already know from the Wii, together offering mods that weren’t there in the 2006 game, but also setting aside other classic styles like golf (which will be included via DLC). ). This version takes more advantage of all the technological advancements that the Switch has to offer than actually introducing new features, and there’s a huge development in terms of fun control precision that far trumps the Wii’s controls.

simple and straightforward

When entering the game, we have the three game options available: a global game (online) a local game and a game with friends (online in a closed room). Online options are available for up to two players, while the local mode depends on the chosen sport.

Starting one of the modes we came across a very nice square called Spocco Square where the available sports are served: the six launch sports: Volleyball, Badminton, Bowling, Soccer, Chambara and Tennis.

The scenario actually resembles a kind of Olympic arena, where several sports are played in the same place, although not exactly the goal of the game, we lose more interaction with the venue, especially online. It would be very interesting if the concept of a virtual city was used here, however, despite it being very beautiful, the screen only serves as a selection menu, and is probably a waste.

When we start a sport that confronts our character’s creativity, it might be this new Nintendo-designed avatar, which has an impeccable look, or even Mii, that will make even the most nostalgic of gamers.

However, the game has quite a few customization options, only a few hair styles, skin colors and one set of several different colors.

In the game, every time a new mode is started or a new player profile is started, we will go through the method tutorial to train the gameplay. All the 6 existing modes have very simple movements, specifically to keep the motion accessible, just do the same movement as we would in a real game and that’s it.

volleyball

Volleyball has five different commands: serve, tackle, lift, cut and block. For fans of this sport it can be a very interesting experience, and for those who are not used to it, the game indicates the thing that needs to be done a few seconds in advance. You can also use the directional pad to move the avatar.

While it’s a very fun style, I admit I felt a lack of more freedom during matches, and we were almost stuck with the movements indicated, so couldn’t do a more daring move like falling on the second touch.

Badminton

Badminton is nothing more than a game of shuttlecock, the goal is not to let the shuttlecock fall to the ground. This is probably the technique that results in faster and more objective matches, pitch is reduced and the time between racket and racket is very short, your avatar can fall to the ground to defend a move and simply doesn’t have time to get up. Badminton ended up becoming one of my favorite games, having fun and intense online matches.

bowling

Bowling is one of the most classic modes in Wii Sports, featuring the largest number of players (up to 16) as well as the longest point-scoring matches.

The gameplay is simple, just put the player in the best way and maneuver the Joy-con by pressing the ZR button.
This method has two different modes: the traditional mode that we are already used to and the special mode where the path acquires some obstacles to increase the challenge.

football

We have a novice player, it’s almost our traditional football, but with a giant ball and an enclosed court, the walls can also be used to direct the ball. This mode has the possibility to play as a single player or in a team of 4 people.
Football is perhaps the most complex mode, it uses two joy cons where the left direction pad is used to move the character and the right direction pad is used to move the camera.

The game has an energy bar to allow running, it also contains commands to request the ball or pass it to another player, and kicks are performed with the movement of the hands, which disappoints those who expected to play with the leg strap, an accessory. Available with the physical version. The only use of this accessory is in the extra penalty mode, where only shots are taken on goal.

chambara

Despite the unpopular name, Chambara is a sword fight where we must fight until one of the players is brought down. The game provides the option to fight with one or two swords that requires one or two joy cons in a row, the game has an interesting variety of strikes and defenses, being way more strategic.

sport shoes

Tennis doesn’t offer much new, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. It has modes from 1 to 4 players on the field, in the single mode we control both players at the same time, so it is necessary to know when to use both of them in the best possible way. The gameplay is the same as in badminton, only you make the movements of the racket.

Bringing friends or family to the game continues that fun experience we are used to with Nintendo party games, the formula doesn’t have much novelty or anything more revolutionary, but the magic of virtual sports will continue, and it can be enjoyed by players of all ages. The movements made with the cons have a great experience and it ends up being very difficult to change the command or lose the movement due to a fault with the equipment, the only small problem that was found was the direction of the ball/racquet not always going to the intended place in the soccer or badminton . The sensation is actually to be holding a bat or a sword.

Even when the audience is not there to share the fun, the game provides a great experience through online modes, it is possible to face both random players in online matches and create closed rooms to play with friends. During my experience, I experienced almost no issues or delays, online matches were as smooth as the local experience. To communicate, the game only provides the option to send some stickers with feedback to use during the game.

Online mode is also responsible for the only way to customize the game: after completing the online match, some points are received (which will be calculated depending on the game and performance), when adding 100 points we have the right to choose a collecting game to get a random item. This strategy appears to have been set up specifically to encourage use of the online mode, which necessarily requires a subscription to a Nintendo Switch Online plan.

Having said all the details of the Nintendo Switch Sports so far, we have to mention a few highlights. First, the gameplay in most sports that are able to get the most out of Joy-Con, the excitement can be such that some joy games can wind up, and in this sense the game makes us remember to always use the straps well attached to the wrist before the start of a match.

Another great success for Nintendo Switch Sports is their graphic quality, from huds to avatars, all very detailed and very well made, despite being a relatively simple game, it’s important to note the attention to detail that Nintendo included throughout the game. This sponsorship also extends to the scenarios, although we have benefited quite a bit from Spocco Square, we can feel how rich and lively the place is, during the beginning of the matches it is possible to see quite a bit of the environment, always full and rich with the characters, as during matches, for example Example, we have ardent fans behind the soccer goal or other players bowling by your side even in single player mode. These small details greatly enrich the experience and the level of immersion that the game provides.

The sound part of the game, although conservative, is also another hit, as the entire soundtrack consists of some light electronic beats that give the game a lively atmosphere and at times bring an air of nostalgia. The title is the second to have subtitles (text and audio) entirely in Brazilian Portuguese, and we have an excellent narration that fits perfectly in the game as well as in Mario Party Superstars. Nintendo Switch Sports is also the first game to be officially distributed in physical media in Brazil, with a release in addition to the game bringing the leg strap, already mentioned in football. Despite the relatively high price, we were happy to see such gestures from Nintendo to the Brazilian community.

We spent the entire review talking very well about the game, and the truth is that there is almost nothing to criticize about this version, Nintendo does a great and excellent job even on the less important titles. Perhaps the biggest problem with the Nintendo Switch Sports is the lack of content as much as we’d like, although the launch esports are diverse, they are few and leave aside many of the styles already laid out in the Nintendo Wii itself. Well, we know that more modes will be added, such as Golf, but in reality it is still few, especially compared to Wii Sports Resort in 2009, a game that is more than 10 years old and released with 12 different modes, twice as many as possible in a game 2022. We should also remember that the original Wii Sports was a completely free version and while Switch Sports costs 200 R$ in the digital version and 300 R$ in physical media, we seem to be paying a lot for little content.

But is Nintendo Switch Sports worth it?

Nintendo Switch Sports returns with the same suggestion as Wii Sports, which is an excellent team game that can be played with any family member or friends, and when not, online matches with random players can also be enjoyed for hours, joy-con does its part to control Excellent, with very few control errors, games can be learned in minutes. The game has excellent graphics and atmosphere, vivid and fully detailed scenarios, the only problem with the title is actually the lack of launch content, especially given its price which we hope will be resolved with future updates. Nintendo Switch Sports is really essential for the Nintendo Switch.
