The search for online solutions in a safe and fast way, not only to assess foreign language level but also to provide research development and professional level, has grown extraordinarily during the pandemic. International selections, searches, and teacher evaluations, it’s all been going on for the past two years. But how can all of this go on, without much technology being involved, which would offer the possibility of an assessment without having to physically test? Some solutions already exist, but they have been used to a great extent, and are becoming cheaper and easier to access.
One example is iTEP International, the leader in online and on-demand English language proficiency testing solutions. Since 2002 when it was established, with the aim of modernizing English language proficiency assessments through online and on-demand tests, it has facilitated admissions processes to educational institutions abroad during the pandemic, solving the internal demand of many teaching institutions around the world, both to place distance learners in English language programs, such as Sheridan College in Canada, or to hire teachers at The City School in Pakistan.
New York University, UCLA Extension, and California State University Northridge are some of the international institutions that use iTEP to check their students’ English language proficiency. iTEP is present in more than 60 countries, with test delivery centers, schools and universities. The solution is also used by more than 90 companies in their selection processes. Among them are iFood, Mc Donald’s, Coca-Cola, Starbucks, JP Morgan, Pfizer, IBM, Walmart, Honda and Oxford Associates. All of these large companies use it to determine the competence needed for hiring and promotion decisions.
Unlike other exams on the market, iTEP exams are conducted 100% online, without the need for the applicant to travel somewhere. This has allowed many universities and schools to continue their admissions processes during the pandemic, even with restrictions. The exams are conducted in a secure environment by iTEP software which films the candidate during the exam, ensuring that the registered person is the one taking the exam. In addition, the test is available 24/7, there is no need to make an appointment in advance and results are delivered within 24 hours after taking the test.
All iTEP exams comply with the international standard of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and assess students’ grammar, reading, writing, listening and listening. The academic test for university admission can be taken from home without the need to do soAnd The appointment takes an average of 90 minutes, with results delivered within 24 hours. In addition, exams are widely used by bilingual schools and university language centers to level and monitor students’ progress in English language programmes. Such was the case with the Federal University of Espirito Santo (UFES), which had already implemented a reading-only mastery platform to admit students into graduate programs during the first year of the pandemic. iTEP’s solution to UFES has been so well accepted that the university has chosen to keep the iTEP’s custom reading test even as classes return to campus.
Whether for evaluation for admission to a university abroad, or for evaluating professors, as well as providing guidance for promotion or appointment of a new candidate for a vacancy, we are seeing more and more integrated educational solutions with high technology and user safety. Certainly, the educational field has advanced a lot in the past couple of years, and many of these developments have come to make access to education cheaper and more democratic.
