For those who play competitively, technology is even more important, as sudden changes in frame rate, common in some games, can cause screen “rips” and disrupt player performance.

When watching a TV show or movie for example, the frame rate is constant, usually somewhere around 24 frames per second (frames per second) for movies. However, in games, this number is between 45 and 60 frames per second – so, to keep this rate stable, VRR technology is important.

There’s an English term used when the frame rate of a TV or monitor is out of sync with that of a console or PC: it’s called screen tearing, and it’s common in high-resolution games. It happens when the screen is unable to keep up with the different shapes of frames in games, which creates “tears” in the gameplay. However, a professional TV or monitor that supports VRR dynamically responds to these differences, refreshing the image according to frame changes, resulting in smoother and more consistent gameplay in competitive or online games.

VRR started with computer games. In this form, video card manufacturers are in a constant battle to improve technology, but each of them has its own resource: AMD’s technology is known as FreeSync, while Nvidia calls it G-Sync.

Although they are two features that solve the same problem, they both work differently. G-Sync is actually an in-display device, and you need to purchase a license from Nvidia to implement the technology on any device. On the other hand, FreeSync is not a device and its use is more free, although it was mostly developed by AMD. This makes FreeSync more popular in the market.

In TVs, so that there are no surprises, the ideal is that the device supports both formats. VRR is part of the HDMI 2.1 specification, which can already be found in some devices and includes many other features, such as ALLM (auto low latency mode) and HFR (high frame rate) for example.

Microsoft Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One X, and Xbox One S consoles support VRR through FreeSync technology, while Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) uses VRR HDMI, the official HDMI 2.1 standard. Some games have already been developed to take advantage of this technology more, such as Spider-Man.
