Capturing and sharing life experiences today often requires multiple platforms and tools, which can lead to uncoordinated storytelling. To meet the needs of creators to control dynamic, interactive storytelling in one place, Esri, the global leader in location intelligence, today launched StoryMaps, a powerful and personalized storytelling tool. The product extends Esri’s creativity to anyone who wants to tell and share their stories.

Using Esri’s mapping technology, this new software brings a geographic approach to any passionate content creator. From documenting your ancestors’ journey to capturing aspects of everyday life or planning a great post-pandemic trip, StoryMaps helps you collect life’s moments worth those experiences.

Esri allows authors to control their narratives with built-in privacy to protect data and automatic ownership of content, and to create them in versatile ways that reflect their own experiences. Creatively combine text and multimedia such as photos, videos, audio, and links to easily share your personal experiences, hobbies, family history, assets, portfolios, travel and more.

Esri StoryMaps is designed to enable people with diverse digital skills to create customized content without the need for mapping or web design experience. StoryMaps allows authors to:

  • Build a story in one place. Create versatile stories of any length using our resources (text, images, videos, audio, etc.) or take advantage of Unsplash with ready-to-use images.
  • Post your story and share it with any audience. Create a private magazine, create an unlisted shareable link to family and friends, or post to all popular social media platforms. Authors can also include stories on websites and blogs.
  • Add custom interactive maps. Take your readers on your journey by adding a map with images and popups, or create a themed map to visualize directions.
  • Incorporate attractive features. Display any content in different ways with flexible components including timeline, gallery, scroll and quotes. All content can be organized into groups that act like folders.
  • Customize the appearance. Choose from the included themes or customize a design with different font, color and layout options.
  • Keep them informed. Easily update and publish stories with new features and functionality every two weeks. Future features will include geolocation ready data provided by wearable devices to display your most recent outdoor activities.

A free basic plan is available with basic storytelling features to ensure that all creators have access at all times. When new users sign up, they get free access to premium features with advanced storytelling functionality for the first 30 days. After that, they can purchase a monthly or yearly subscription to Premium StoryMaps for $10 or $100, respectively, or go back to the basic free storytelling option.
