Breaktor Technology is a new advanced circuit protection solution for battery electric vehicles that combines the function of fuses, switches and contactors into one coordinated device. As electric vehicle power levels increase, the Breaktor circuit protection solution solves the growing challenge of coordinating fuses and contactors, providing fast, safe and reliable protection for high-powered batteries and inverter systems.

“To meet consumer demand for electric vehicles with longer range and faster charging, new electric vehicles have increased power levels, adding to the need for advanced circuit protection for these high voltage systems,” said Scott Adams, president of eMobility at Eaton. “Our Breaktor technology delivers improved safety and reliability for an EV system with a simplified architecture. In fact, the Breaktor circuit protection module can replace up to 15 components. We are excited to bring such an important part of the EV system to this automaker. An international class” .

Breaktor Circuit Protection Technology is an innovative solution that takes full advantage of industrial electrical technology and Eaton’s automotive expertise to deliver performance and reliability with streamlined engineering. With operation of less than 4 milliseconds for short circuit faults up to 900V and 25,000A, circuit breaker protection technology increases vehicle safety and protects components from any level of overcurrent more effectively than conventional circuit protection methods. A circuit breaker protection solution such as a circuit breaker can be reset, which allows the equipment to be reactivated after a function check and reduces costs for both the OEM and the consumer.

“In the event of a collision, Eaton’s Breaktor circuit protection technology works in tandem with the vehicle’s safety systems,” Adams said. “Quickly disconnect the high voltage battery from the rest of the vehicle, for protection and safety in the event of any unsafe conditions.”

Breaktor circuit protection technology provides BEV manufacturers with a number of additional benefits, including:

  • An automatic disconnect device that can detect surges in current and interrupt the circuit without the need for any external detection or tripping.

  • Current limiting device in the event of a short circuit, improving system-wide protection.

  • Operating independently of the current direction, allowing for charging and use while in service under full electrical load.

  • Availability in different configurations, including different voltage levels and multi-pole designs.

The Breaktor circuit protection solution was designed and tested at Eaton’s state-of-the-art electrical facilities in Bonn, Germany, with sub-production scheduled to begin this year in Gummersbach, Germany and final assembly in Gyor, Hungary.
