COROLLA CROSS WINS GR-SPORT EDITION AND HILUX GR-S RENEWED – SELF-EXPIRED

The Velo Città racetrack in the interior of São Paulo was the stage Toyota chose to present its new GAZOO Racing concept models.

By company definition, Toyota vehicles that receive the GAZOO Racing seal must have features that improve dynamic behavior, either through a more powerful engine, or if this is not possible, the vehicle must receive suspension and steering improvements to make the feel “Driving pleasure“(Driving pleasure) appears at the first corner. In addition, aesthetic modifications have been adopted both internally and externally to enhance the car’s sporty appearance.

The migration of consumers to the small car segment is a fact that does not show any signs of slowing down, on the contrary, it has only increased, and manufacturers cannot miss this surfing wave. And that’s exactly what Toyota does when it releases the sporty version of its small medium car, the Corolla Cross. The choice was to use the higher version with the internal combustion engine, XRE, and create a new level with increased content.

The black painted roof, discreet stickers on the underside of the doors and new wheels make up the profile.

The engine that powers this new version is the same as the XRE and XR, a Dynamic Force 2.0 flex engine, in-line four-cylinder, 16-valve with dual chain-actuated camshafts and variable-opening time in the intake producing 169/177 hp at 6,600 hp and torque. Maximum 21.4 meters-per-kg at 4,400 rpm, which paired with the torque converter to the 10-speed CVT Direct Shift isn’t best suited for sporty driving, but that’s what Toyota engineers do. an offer.

The engine assembly and gearbox are the same as the XRE version

There were two laps on the racetrack and I decided to do the first lap in automatic driving mode with the sport function activated and traction control deactivated, so there is no power loss at the cornering exits. Acceleration and re-acceleration responses should be expected because gear shift delays not seen in intercity highway use end up showing up on the track. But the general behavior was satisfactory.

10-speed CVT gearbox with serial number plate on the center console

On lap two, I used the transmission in manual mode with gears shifting by butterflies behind the steering wheel. My guess is that it’s not the best choice for a CVT gearbox. When braking and approaching a curve, when commanding to downshift, an audible warning appears indicating that the rpm is still high, and the switch to a lower gear does not occur. When looking for re-acceleration, the car is without power because the shortest gear has not been engaged. I aborted and finished the ride in drive mode because it’s so much more enjoyable for such a short review.

Roof reflector and new rear bumper frame

Since increasing power was not possible on the Corolla Cross GR-Sport, Toyota engineers decided to make the body stiffer in order to get a stiffer suspension. A correct decision, because if they had only increased the stiffness of the suspension, the body would have experienced greater torsional stresses, which could reduce the durability of the unified body and even cause noise in the internal components. hated squeak And rattles (screams and rattles).

The removal of chrome eaves can be seen from all sides

Metal reinforcements were inserted into the central part of the bodywork to connect the two sides of the central tunnel. And at the rear, and under the rear bumper, a transverse member was added to increase the torsional rigidity in the area.

Coil springs in the front and rear suspensions have increased their elastic constants and the compressive dampers have been recalibrated to the new suspension frequency. The goal was to leave the suve with a neutral behavior in the curves and with slight body rolling, which was the goal.

The steering wheel and gear lever have red stitching details; On the left, away from the brake pedal, the parking brake pedal

The power steering has also been recalibrated to achieve greater precision and a greater sense of ownership. There was no change in the steering ratio, but re-calibration through the control program. The rated effort progression has been adjusted at speed and the central feel is more positive, providing greater comfort for long trips.

Model exclusivity begins with new front and rear bumpers, exclusive to the GR-Sport version. While the front includes a new grille and new fog lamp moldings, at the rear is an air extractor simulator that helps cover the controversial rear exhaust muffler that is now painted black. The 18-inch wheels also offer a Edition-exclusive design.

The roof received a reflector at the rear end, and the paintwork can be two-tone with the roof, pillars and mirrors in metallic black. White, black or red sticker stripes have been added on the sides – depending on the color of the car. The GR logo appears on the trunk lid and sides. The headlights also receive a black mask.

Inside, the seats are wrapped in leather and UltraSuede® with red stitching and the GR logo on the headrest. The same stitching details were applied to the steering wheel, and the unit number identification plate was installed on the console.

In addition to the standard content of the XRE Edition, the new GR-Sport receives Toyota Safety Sense, which consists of the following systems: pre-collision with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, as well as a blind spot. Lane departure alert system with lane departure alert function.

In the entire panel, the same convenience and functionality can be observed as the higher versions of the Corolla Cross.

The new Corolla Cross GR-Sport is available in three colors: lunar white (pearl), onyx red (metallic), and both with a painted black (metallic) roof.

  • Corolla Cross GR-Sport (Monochrome) – 188,490.00 BRL
  • Corolla Cross GR-Sport (Dualtone) – 189,990.00 BRL

In its third generation, the pickup truck comes with a 20-horsepower turbocharged engine that is more powerful than other versions, allowing for better off-road performance. And in combination with the more powerful engine, the suspension was also improved by receiving new compressed monotube dampers and calibrated more suitable for mixed use.

New bumper and grille

The longitudinally installed 2.8L 1GD inline four-cylinder turbo engine features a variable-geometric turbocharger and intercooler and starts out at 224 hp at 3000 rpm with a maximum torque of 55 m kg at 2800 rpm. The six-speed automatic transmission is mated to the ring gear via a torque converter and allows gear shifting in manual mode via the lever or butterflies behind the steering wheel. The ECO and Power driving modes adjust the throttle curve, for more aggressive interactions (POWER mode) or with more controlled consumption (ECO mode).

Reducing the size of the side stickers is appreciated

The 4×2, 4×4 and 4×4 traction reducer has an electronic drive, an active traction control system and a rear differential lock. The system is equipped with an active descent control system that limits the vehicle’s speed to 7 km/h without the need for the driver to use the pedal or brake.

The interior is comfortable and contains many exclusive elements of the GR-S Edition

In addition to increasing engine power, the new Hilux GR-S received suspension improvements by increasing the stiffness of the front (helical) and rear (spring) springs. The shock absorbers have a 30% larger diameter than other Hilux models, which allows for more oil and gives longer life for the bar seals as the fluid operates at a lower temperature.

It loses the 4×4 sticker on the side of the bucket, but it is still the 4×4 version

The power steering was recalibrated to give more control at higher speeds, but it brought more effort for low-speed maneuvers on dry ground. It’s time for the Hilux to receive electric-assisted steering as its main competitors (S10 and Ranger) already offer.

“santonio” is a standard item in the GR-S version, which has no options

The Hilux GR-S decal design was already outdated and tired, and deserved a new look. And that’s exactly what Toyota has introduced in this new version. The lines in the lower area of the doors are simpler and contrast with the color of the car. Fender flares have a reflective insert at the top of the bow. The 17-inch alloy wheels are uniquely designed and use 265/60R17 All-Terrain rims.

Exclusive design of aluminum wheels and reflective moldings to the wheel housing make the tracks safer

Inside, the leather upholstery and perforated suede seats are accentuated with red stitching. The GR branding is highlighted on the headrest and the instrument panel and door panel are enhanced with plastic moldings simulating carbon fibre. The pedal shoes are made of aluminum and the mats are exclusive and refer to the GR-S version.

The Toyota Safety Sense package of safety features includes forward collision warning systems with pedestrian and cyclist detection; Lane Deviation Alert; Adaptive Cruise Control; Blind Spot Warning and Lane Keeping Assist with Lane Departure Alert.

The GR logo on the tailgate is another visual identification of the truck

In the short stretch of off-road evaluated in dry conditions, a good angle of entry and exit of the model could be observed, since other stretches of water tank, sandbank, and steep ascents and descents are designed to increase the difficulty of the wet ground. And greater force should be better perceived at higher speeds, especially with a bucket load.

Good angle of attack provided by the front bumper design

Exterior color options remain consistent with Toyota GAZOO Racing’s signature colors, offering Attitude Black, Volcano Red and Pearl White. The last two options have a two-tone (dual tone) variant with Attitude Black roof, hood and mirrors.

  • Hilux GR-S – 348.790.00 BRL

Both models offered are already in dealerships of the brand and complement the GAZOO Racing line that was already available as the Corolla GR-S sedan and SW4 GR-S suve.
